Movie Review Ek Main Aur Ekk Tu

Starring: Imran Khan, Kareena Kapoor, Boman Irani

Producer: Karan Johar
Director: Shakun Batra
Music Directors: Amit Trivedi

Ek Main Aur Ekk Tu has the done-to-death theme of opposites getting attracted to each other, but the sensitive treatment by first-time director Shakun Batra, enhanced by an underplayed wit throughout and an unusual climax, lifts the movie out of mediocrity and places it in a special league. The performances, not just by the lead pair, but the entire supporting cast, are delightful, too.  And no, Ek Main... is not an adaptation of What Happens in Vegas. Only the accidental marriage bit is similar.

After a night of drunken revelry in Las Vegas, the uptight out-of-job architect, Rahul Kapoor (Imran Khan) and the free spirited hairstylist, Riana (Kareena Kapoor) wake up in the morning to discover that they have got married. They have ten days to annul the marriage. Will they?

The film is not just a romantic comedy, it is also a coming of age drama which has some very powerful moments, especially in the post-interval portions. Rahul’s climactic outburst at the dinner table is one of them.

Imran Khan is evolving into a very likeable actor and suits the role to a T! Kareena’s character is an urbanized version of Geet of Jab We Met, and she is in her element. Kareena is actually the life of the movie, but it is to Imran’s credit that he doesn’t allow himself to be dwarfed by the much more experienced actress. The chemistry between them is refreshingly more conversational than corporeal. Boman Irani excels yet again.

The cinematography is brilliant with the dazzling locales of Las Vegas being captured with aplomb. The editing and music are superb, too. So go for this slick and breezy fare.
