Shuddh Desi Romance

Starring: Sushant Singh Rajput, Parineeti Chopra, Vaani Kapoor, Rishi Kapoor
Director: Maneesh Sharma
Music Directors: Sachin-Jigar

There’s nothing really shuddh or desi about this romance! With the hero locking lips with his heroines 27 times in the course of the movie (the first one takes place in a moving bus!), Sushant Singh Rajput is fast giving competition to the serial kisser Emraan Hashmi. That said, Shuddh Desi Romance is an extremely watchable film that captures a slice of contemporary India in a non-preachy and entertaining way.

Set in the colorful, bustling city of Jaipur in Rajasthan, the movie talks about attraction, love, and (lack of) commitment through its three lead actors in a very real and matter-of-fact manner. Its actual strength lies in the delightful conversational chemistry between the characters. It’s the story of a tourist guide-cum-conman, Raghu (Sushant Singh Rajput), and the two women in his life—the gregarious rebel, Gayatri (Parineeti Chopra) and the gorgeous Tara (Vaani Kapoor).

Though there is a discernible dip in energy post-interval and the last bit seems contrived and unconvincing, Shuddh Desi Romance is worth a watch for its writing and direction, manifested through its consummate performances. The scruffily handsome Sushant Singh Rajput as the irresistibly goofy Raghu charms yet again after Kai Po Che! Parineeti with her expressive eyes is spontaneous and endearing as always. Together the two capture the nuances perfectly. Newcomer Vaani Kapoor makes a self-assured debut, carrying off Jaideep Sahni’s crackling lines with the ease of a professional. Rishi Kapoor as a feisty wedding caterer is in terrific form.
