Ghajini

Starring: Aamir Khan, Asin, Jiah Khan

Director: AR Murugadoss

Music Director: AR Rahman

The most remarkable thing about Ghajini is that despite the high degree of violence, it is a highly entertaining film, thanks to its slick narration and fast pace. Loosely inspired by Memento, the movie moves back and forth in time, keeping the viewers riveted throughout with its gripping screenplay wherein a breezy, yet subtle, romance in the past is interspersed with a brutal present.

And Aamir? Well, this Khan just grows better and better with each film. The actor hardly has anything to say in the movie, yet he speaks volumes—with his body language, his facial expressions, his vacant stare and his anguished shrieks. He is equally convincing in his hotshot biz honcho avatar. It’s a masterly performance by Aamir and without a doubt, the high point of the film.

Tycoon Sanjay Singhania (Aamir) is suffering from short-term memory loss after the violent murder of his girlfriend Kalpana (Asin). Armed with this severe handicap, he has to seek out the killers and finish them off. All he has to aid him in his mission are some photographs, tattoos and articles. Can’t reveal more? but it’s a story told with flourish.

Asin is fabulously endearing. Not only does she look fresh and lovely, she is also a complete natural on screen. Jiah Khan in her role of a medical student is good, too, and has an arresting screen presence. Pradeep Rawat as the villain Mr. Ghajini, though good, could have been made to look more menacing, his gold tooth notwithstanding! Also, the fight sequences needed some tighter editing.

AR Rahman, as expected, comes up with some chart-busting numbers including the excellently choreographed Behka and Guzarish. Kaise Mujhko is soulful.

To sum up, Ghajini is no run-of-the-mill revenge saga. It is also a touching love story. Do not miss it.
