Movie Update

Mani Ratnam’s next project will reportedly be an adaptation of the Ramayan featuring Abhishek Bachchan and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan as modern-day Ram and Sita.

Mahesh Bhatt and Pooja Bhatt are reportedly set to remake a remake of theirs. Confused? Well, father and daughter want to remake Dil Hai Ki Maanta Nahin, which was a remake of the Hollywood classic It Happened One Night. Himesh Reshammiya is rumored to be the actor who will step into the legendary Clark Gable’s shoes.

Australian fast bowler Brett Lee will make his debut in Bollywood with a cameo in Manmohan Shetty’s Victory starring Harman Baweja in the lead. Meanwhile, Pakistani fast bowler Mohammed Asif is all set to replace Shoaib Akhtar in the Bollywood film Mein Aur Meri Himmat.

Do Paise Ki Dhoop Chaar Aane Ki Baarish—that’s the title of Deepti Naval’s directorial debut. Deepti has cast good friend Manisha Koirala in the lead. The film revolves around the relationship between three characters. One of them is a little boy whom Deepti has brought along from New York.

Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s next project reportedly will be Chenab Gandhi in which Amitabh Bachchan is slated to play a relatively unsung patriotic hero.

Kismat Konnection

Starring: Shahid Kapoor, Vidya Balan, Juhi Chawla

Director: Aziz Mirza

Music Director: Pritam

Kismat Konnection is no path-breaking cinema. It doesn’t claim to be. But its simplicity and charm does leave you with a smile on your face. You certainly won’t be cursing your kismat after watching it! You will also find shades of the Hollywood flick Just My Luck, Lage Raho Munnabhai and the director’s own Raju Ban Gaya Gentleman.

Raj Malhotra (Shahid Kapur) is a brilliant but unemployed architect in Toronto, Canada. His desperation for a job takes him to a quirky crystal ball gazer, Hasina Bano (Juhi Chawla) who advises him to find his lucky charm and not let go of it. Predictably, Raj bumps into Priya (Vidya Balan), an activist sort, and life is suddenly hunky dory for him. There’s just one hitch: Priya already has a boyfriend!

As far as acting goes, it’s undoubtedly Shahid’s movie. He is a complete natural and his high-energy performance is engaging all the way. Vidya has expressive eyes and a lovely smile but how you long to see her in a saree! However pretty and talented she might be, she cannot carry off western ensembles. By the way, the onscreen connection between Shahid and Vidya is, disappointingly, pretty lacklustre. Juhi tends to go over the top but then, her role demands that.

Music by Pritam is pleasing to the ears, especially the Bakhuda Tumhi Ho number. The dance numbers are catchy. Canada’s breathtaking locales have been captured beautifully by cinematographer Binod Pradhan. Just one thing: There was need for tighter editing in the second half. The film took its own sweet time to reach the finale.
