Fun Time: Air India’s 10-Hour Flight to Nowhere
After spending 10 hours in the air, passengers on a recent Air India flight from Chicago to Delhi found themselves back where they started. The plane turned around while flying over Greenland due to what the airline called a “technical” issue. “Alternative arrangements are being made to fly passengers to their destination,” the airline said. “Full refunds and complimentary rescheduling are also available for those who opt for them. At Air India, the safety and well-being of our customers and crew remain our top priority.”
The technical issue was that eight of the 12 toilets on the flight had become inoperable. An investigation later found that a number of items had been flushed down a toilet and blocked the plumbing. “We would like to confirm that as part of our investigation into the incident, our teams found polythene bags, rags and clothes that had been flushed down and stuck in the plumbing. This led the lavatories to become unserviceable,” a spokesperson for Air India said.
The spokesperson noted that objects such as blankets, underwear, and diapers have been flushed down toilets on other flights. “We take this opportunity to urge passengers to use lavatories only for the purposes that they are meant for,” the spokesperson said. The spokesperson did not say whether the flight crew has ever attempted to ask, “Is there a plumber on board?”
