Good Sports: BOXERS WIN MULTIPLE MEDALS

Flyweight boxer Amit Panghal made history recently when he became the first Indian to reach the final of a World Boxing Championships event. He returned home from the 2019 AIBA World Boxing Championships in Yekaterinburg, Russia, with India’s first silver medal, which, coupled with Manish Kaushik’s bronze medal, marked the first time India had won multiple medals at the world championships.
Seeded second in the flyweight division, Panghal won four bouts to reach the final, where he lost to Uzbekistan’s Shakhobidin Zoirov, an Olympic gold medalist. Kaushik competed in the lightweight division and also won four bouts, before bowing out to Cuba’s Andy Cruz Gomez in the semi-finals.
“I am very happy about winning silver,” Panghal told IANS. “Of course I would have wanted to win gold, and I will work on my weaknesses to convert this silver into gold in my upcoming challenges.”
