Good Sports: Fourteen-Year-Old Becomes IPL Sensation

Last November, when the Rajasthan Royals bid $130,000 for 13-year-old Vaibhav Suryavanshi in the Indian Premier League’s mega auction, Royals CEO Jake Lush McCrum described him as an “incredible talent.” “Lots of work will go in over the coming months to continue to develop him, but a hell of a talent,” McCrum said.
It didn’t take long for Vaibhav, the youngest player to receive an IPL contract, to prove that he belonged in the league. On April 28, in just his third IPL game, he smashed 11 sixes and seven fours on his way to a scintillating 101 against the Gujarat Titans, making headlines across the world. At age 14 years and 32 days, he became the youngest player to score an IPL century. He reached the mark in just 35 balls, the second-fastest in IPL history behind Chris Gayle (30 balls). “He’s a special kid and he’s a special talent,” Royals batting coach Vikram Rathore said. “If he keeps working hard he’ll have a special place in Indian cricket I’m sure.”
