Good Sports: Gukesh D Becomes Youngest Khel Ratna Award Winner

Barely a month after becoming the youngest world chess champion, Gukesh Dommaraju became the youngest athlete to receive the Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna Award, India’s highest sporting honor. Gukesh was 18 years, 7 months, and 20 days old when he received the award on January 17, more than a year younger than the previous record holder, rifle shooter Abhinav Bindra. Bindra, the first Indian to win an individual Olympic gold medal, received the award in 2002.
Three other athletes, Manu Bhaker, Harmanpreet Singh, and Praveen Kumar, were also honored with Khel Ratna Awards. Bhaker won two bronze medals in shooting at the Paris Olympics, Singh led India’s hockey team to its second consecutive Olympic bronze, and Kumar won a gold medal in the men’s high jump T64 event at the Paris Paralympics.
