Good Sports: Haryana shooter Wins Gold at World Championships
At age 20, Haryana shooter Samrat Rana is already a world champion in shooting, winning a gold medal in the men’s 10m air pistol event at the World Championships in Cairo, Egypt. He is only the third Indian shooter to win a gold medal at the World Championships, joining Abhinav Bindra and Rudrankksh Patil, who both did it in 10m air rifle.
Rana pulled off a big upset in the final, beating China’s Hu Kai, who was favored after winning four World Cup golds this year. A final shot of 10.6 gave him a total score of 243.7, edging past Kai’s 243.3 to take the top spot on the podium. Rana developed as a shooter under the guidance of his father, Ashok Kumar Rana, who opened a shooting academy in Karnal to train his son and two daughters. “To see Samrat become the world champion today feels like each one of us has become world champions,” an elated Ashok told The Indian Express.
