Good Sports: Hitesh Gulia Wins Gold at World Boxing Cup

Twenty-year-old Hitesh Gulia of Haryana won a gold medal at the first World Boxing Cup of the year, held in Brazil from March 31 to April 5. Competing in the 70kg division, Gulia clinched gold after defeating French Olympian Makan Traore in the semi-finals. His opponent in the final, Odel Kamara of England, forfeited the match due to injury. Gulia started boxing at age 10 and credits the Indian Navy with giving him a job and the financial resources to continue boxing.
“The World Cup victory has been momentous for me,” Gulia told The Times of India. “I felt confident about my prospects after training in Brazil with international boxers for 10 days preceding the event. I know this gold will transform everything for me, from recognition to monetary rewards.” He is the first Indian to win gold at the World Boxing Cup, a competition format developed by World Boxing, a two-year-old international sports organization that regulates amateur boxing.
