Good Sports: India Triumphs at Women’s Cricket World Cup
The Women’s Cricket World Cup has been played 13 times since 1973 and, until this year, the trophy had been shared by only three countries: Australia (seven times), England (four times) and New Zealand (once). India finally joined the winner’s circle last month, winning the World Cup as host nation, a breakthrough that set off joyful celebrations around the country. India beat Australia by 5 wickets in the semi-final and South Africa by 52 runs in the final. Shefali Verma led India with 87 runs in the final, while spinner Deepti Sharma took five wickets and contributed 58 runs to India’s 298-7 total. It was India’s third appearance in a Women’s Cricket World Cup final, having lost to Australia in 2005 and England in 2017.
“This is the start,” said triumphant captain Harmanpreet Kaur, speaking at the post-match presentation ceremony. “We wanted to break this barrier. And our next plan is to make this a habit. We were waiting for it; now this moment has come. So many big occasions are coming, and we want to keep improving. This is not the end, just the beginning.”
