Good Sports: Indians Sprinters Set National Records
Indian athletes have set three national sprinting records since March, boosting their hopes of winning medals at the Asian Games and other international competitions. Gurindervir Singh set the 100-meter record with a time of 10.20 seconds, Animesh Kujur set the 200-meter record with 20.40 seconds, and they both joined Manikanta Hoblidar and Amlan Borgohain to set the 4x100m relay record with 38.69 seconds.
James Hillier, athletics director at the Reliance Foundation, is particularly optimistic about India’s chances in relay events. “Firstly, the relay is one team per country at the biggest events. Whereas, in the individuals, there are three athletes from each country,” he told Deccan Herald. “More importantly, our athletes are very good at top speed running. Meaning, once they get up to the speed they are really good. Now in a relay, you are taking the baton as you are moving, so it takes away the acceleration element off the blocks. This suits our athletes better.”
