Good Sports: MIT COACH MOVES TO MEMPHIS
The National Basketball Association’s Memphis Grizzlies have hired Sonia Raman as an assistant coach, making her the 14th female assistant coach in the history of the NBA.
Raman spent the last 12 seasons as the head women’s basketball coach at Massachusetts Institute of Technology. She began her coaching career as an assistant coach at her alma mater, Tufts University, where she had been a four-year player and captain. A graduate of Boston College Law School, she becomes the third assistant coach of Indian origin in the NBA, along with Vin Bhavnani (Oklahoma City Thunder) and Roy Rana (Sacramento Kings).
“I’m thrilled to have the opportunity to be part of the Memphis Grizzlies coaching staff,” Raman said. “I must also give a truly special thank you to MIT and the women I’ve had the honor of coaching for the past 12 years.”
