Good Sports: OLYMPIC BOXER EXCELS AT FRENCH TOURNEY
Nine Indian boxers—five men and four women— will compete at the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo, postponed until next summer because of the pandemic. India has previously won two Olympic bronze medals, thanks to Vijender Singh in 2008 and Mary Kom in 2012, and its prospects of another medal rest heavily on Amit Panghal’s shoulders.
The flyweight boxer from Haryana, who last year became the first Indian boxer to win a silver medal at the 2019 AIBA World Boxing Championships, recently won gold at the Alexis Vastine International Boxing Tournament in Nantes, France. The Asian Games champion dominated America’s Abraham Rene Perez in the final, as he competed in his first international competition since the Olympic qualifier in March.
