Good Sports: Raman Named Head Coach of Seattle Storm
Sonia Raman was hired last month as the head coach of the Seattle Storm, making history as the first person of Indian descent to be the top coach of a WNBA team. She was previously the first Indian American woman to be an assistant coach in the NBA, serving in the role for the Memphis Grizzlies from 2020 to 2024. “Sonia is a trailblazer, and learning about her road and her career path to getting here to Seattle was really moving,” said Storm general manager Talisa Rhea, introducing Raman at a press conference. “Furthermore, her vision for us and where we could go was very exciting.”
Raman, 51, who has a law degree from Boston College, spent 12 years as the head coach of the MIT Engineers women’s basketball team before joining the Grizzlies. “It’s a tremendous honor and a privilege to be sitting here and to be in that role,” she said of being the first Indian American head coach in the WNBA. “It’s a huge responsibility as well. I’ve said this before: I am the first, but I don’t want to be the last. . . . I’m doing my best so I can create these opportunities, open these doors or just allow this next generation to see what’s possible.”
