Good Sports: Rohit Sharma Retires from Test Cricket
India’s cricket captain recently announced his retirement from Test cricket, ending a Test career in which he scored 4,301 runs, including 12 centuries, in 67 matches. “It has been an absolute honour to represent my country in whites,” Sharma posted on Instagram. Sharma, 38, had served as captain since 2022, but his batting struggles in recent Test matches and reports that he’d be replaced as Test captain had prompted his retirement. He retired from T20 internationals in 2024 after India’s triumph at the T20 World Cup. He will continue to play One-Day Internationals (ODIs). Sharma led India in 24 Test matches, winning 12, losing 9 and drawing 3. His winning percentage of 50 percent as captain was second only to Virat Kohli (58 percent).
Known as the “hitman” of Indian cricket, Sharma made his Test debut in 2013 with 177 runs against West Indies at Eden Gardens in Kolkata. In 2019, as India’s opening batsman against South Africa, he set a record for the most sixes by a male player in a Test match with 13 and also became the first player to hit two hundreds in their first Test match as an opening batsman.
