Good Sports: Soccer Team Wins Bronze at CAFA Nations Cup
The Indian men’s soccer team pulled off two upsets to win a bronze medal at the CAFA Nations Cup 2025, held in Uzbekistan and Tajikistan. India has a special invitation to the tournament, which was started in 2023 for men’s national teams of the Central Asian Football Association (CAFA).
In the group stage, India (ranked 133rd in the world) beat Tajikistan (ranked 106th) by a 2-1 score. With one win, one draw, and one loss, India qualified for the third-place match against Oman (ranked 79th). After a 1-1 draw in regulation time, India eked out a 3-2 victory on penalties, as keeper Gurpreet Singh Sandhu made three critical saves. Mansukh Mandaviya, Union Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports, congratulated the team on X, calling it a “new era of Indian football.”
