Good Sports: TOP COLLEGE GOLFER IN AMERICA
Pepperdine University’s Sahith Theegala is the undisputed top college golfer in America, having swept the three most prestigious player-of-the-year awards in collegiate golf.
The 23-year-old from Chino Hills, California, was named the Division I winner of the Jack Nicklaus Award last month. He had previously won the Fred Haskins and Ben Hogan awards, becoming only the fifth individual golfer to sweep all three honors.
Theegala, a three-time All-American golfer, made his PGA Tour debut at the recent Travelers Championship. Though he failed to make the cut, he remains confident about his prospects in professional golf.
“I don’t want to sound cocky or anything, but I’m playing to win,” Theegala told The New York Times. “It’s not like I’m just playing to make the cut or anything like that. If you’re not trying to win, what are you doing?”
His father, Muralidhar Theegala, who is from Hyderabad, has high hopes for the young golfer.
