Good Sports: UPENN Student Recognized for Book Charity
When she was 17, Emily Bhatnagar started For Love & Buttercup, a nonprofit that gives books to children undergoing cancer treatment. Since then, she has collected and distributed more than 25,000 books. Now 21, the University of Pennsylvania student was recently honored with the Margaret L. Hodges Leadership Award from the Lombardi Comprehensive Cancer Center at Georgetown University Medical Center.
Bhatnagar started her charity after her father, Mike Bhatnagar, was diagnosed with thyroid cancer. Books helped her cope with the anxiety she felt, and she wanted to share her love for reading with others. “I had always loved books,” she told The Philadelphia Inquirer. “Books were very comforting and gave me a way to transport myself to a world that was very different from my reality.”
