Good Sports: Women’s Soccer Team Qualifies for Asian Cup Finals
For the first time ever, India has qualified for the AFC Women’s Asian Cup Finals through the qualification route. They did it by upsetting hosts Thailand 2-1, giving India four victories in four matches in Group B of the qualification tournament.
The Indian women did not give up a single goal in their first three matches, including a 13-0 drubbing of Mongolia, 4-0 win over Timor-Leste and 5-0 victory over Iraq. Thailand also won its first three matches easily (11-0, 4-0, and 7-0 against the same opponents), setting up a winner-takes-all clash against India.
Midfielder Sangita Basfore scored both goals against Thailand, a team ranked 24 places above India (No. 70) in the FIFA world rankings.
“All the hard work, all the heartbreaks, all the previous matches we couldn’t win, flashbacks of everything came all together. Finally we achieved it and we could come back home happy,” Basfore told The Indian Express.
