Good Sports: WRESTLING IN A SALWAR-KAMEEZ

The first Indian woman to compete in the World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) circuit, Kavita Devi lost her debut match to New Zealand’s Dakota Kai, but won plenty of attention on the Internet, particularly for her outfit: she wrestled in a saffron salwar-kameez with a dupatta.

A former powerlifter who won a gold medal for India in the South Asian Games, Devi caught the attention of WWE scouts during a tryout in Dubai. That allowed the Haryana native to compete in the inaugural Mae Young Classic women’s tournament.

“It was a great experience,” she told TNN. “To compete in the ring with some of the best wrestlers from across the world is something I have never done before. I got to be around them and learn a lot from each of them. I believe this will make me stronger as a performer.”
