Good Sports: TCS Sponsors New York City Marathon
The New York Road Runners announced last month that Tata Consultancy Services Ltd. (TCS) has signed an eight-year agreement to be the new title sponsor of the New York City Marathon, replacing ING U.S. Inc. in 2014 and beyond.
TCS, an IT services, consulting and business solutions company that’s part of the Tata group, India’s largest industrial conglomerate, has been the title sponsor of the Amsterdam Marathon and has sponsored many other races, though never quite on this scale in America.
Natarajan Chandrasekaran, chief executive officer, told Bloomberg.com that about 50 percent of the company’s business is U.S.- based. “Wellness, fitness, education:these are the types of initiatives we actively promote in the communities,” he said.
Chandrasekaran, 50, is a runner himself—he has run the New York City, Boston and Chicago marathons. “I compete with myself every time and my goal is to complete every race,” he said. “I’m not running in 2013, but maybe 2014.”
What better way to inaugurate TCS’s sponsorship of the marathon than to have its CEO complete the race?
