Good Sports: Youngest to Climb Mt. Everest

Malavath Poorna, 13, whose parents are poor Dalit farmers in Andhra Pradesh, recently became the youngest girl to climb Mount Everest.

“It was very difficult. Every step is a dangerous step,’’ she told reporters in New Delhi.

Sponsored by the Andhra Pradesh Social Welfare Residential Educational Institution Society, it was her first attempt to climb any mountain. She had trained for eight months with her parents’ encouragement.

“When I reached the top of Everest, very good experience,” she said. “I feel great and proud, and I shed joyful tears.’’
