INDIA LAUNCHES WINTER GAMES
India sends only a few athletes to the Winter Olympics, but there’s enough interest in snowboarding, skiing and other winter sports that the country recently launched its first-ever Winter Games.
Organized through Khelo India, a national sports development program, the games were held in two venues, first in Ladakh, where athletes competed in ice hockey, figure skating and speed skating, and then in Gulmarg, where 30 events were held, including alpine and cross country skiing, snowboarding and snow shoeing.
After inaugurating the games in Gulmarg, India’s Sports Minister Kiren Rijiju tweeted that it was “a great day for Indian sports.”
