Lucrative Consulting Gigs if you can Get Them
The coronavirus pandemic didn’t just claim more than half-a-million lives in America, it left many people in financial despair. But some saw their fortunes rise during the pandemic, as demand for their products and services increased. Among them was Dr. Vivek Murthy, President Biden’s nominee for Surgeon General, who has earned at least $2.6 million in consulting fees and speaking engagements since January 2020, according to The Washington Post.
Carnival Corporation, the parent company of Carnival Cruise Line and Princess Cruises, paid Murthy $400,000 for consulting services related to the pandemic.
The Harvard- and Yale-educated doctor, who served as Surgeon General under President Obama, also earned $410,000 in cash and 2,000 stock shares from Airbnb. He gave the travel-rental company advice on Covid-related safety practices between April and November last year.
According to the Post, his name appears in hundreds of Airbnb listings, including one for a condo in Mexico that says, “We’re excited to share that we’ve implemented the new Airbnb enhanced cleaning protocol developed with guidance from Dr. Vivek H. Murthy, the former U.S. Surgeon General.”
Murthy also earned $292,500 from cosmetics giant Estée Lauder for his consulting services on mental health practices and more than $600,000 from Netflix for advice on whether the company could safely resume its film and TV productions.
Like many public figures, Murthy also cashed in through speaking engagements all over the country, earning at least $522,650 for about three dozen speeches.
