Why Pizza Is Popular In India

Pizza Hut and Domino's Pizza are in hot competition with each other in India, as Fortune magazine reported recently. India has 134 Pizza Hut and 149 Domino's locations, with each chain opening 50 stores a year. Pizza Hut hopes to have 300 stores by 2012, while Domino's is shooting for 500 outlets by 2010.

Pizza is popular in India, Fortune claims, because it's "similar to India's native cuisine. Unlike Chinese and Japanese, Indians eat leavened bread (naan), and a popular traditional version slathers it in butter and garlic – not unlike garlic bread, the most often ordered side dish at both Domino's and Pizza Hut franchises in India. Cheese (paneer) is ubiquitous in India's northern cuisine. Tomatoes and all kinds of sauces are prevalent everywhere. Combine these ingredients into one gooey, oily, tasty dish that you can eat with your hands – as Indians traditionally do – and you have a hit."

Isn't that what you always loved about pizza – that you could eat it with your hands?
