Ajay Vishwanathan is a winner of CDC honor award
At the 73rd annual CDC Honor Awards Ceremony held in Atlanta, scientific researcher Dr. Ajay Vishwanathan and his study group received the prestigious honor award from Dr. Mandy Cohen, then director of Centers for Disease Control & Prevention, recognizing their exemplary laboratory quality and research that furthered efforts in the field to prevent Group B Streptococcus (GBS) disease. GBS is a bacterium that can cause severe, potentially deadly infections. When GBS is in the gastrointestinal tract, which occurs in about one in five pregnant women, fetuses and newborns can be exposed to the bacteria in utero or during vaginal delivery. Since newborns have lower levels of immunity, they are especially at risk for GBS disease. This bacterium is a major global cause of stillbirth, neonatal sepsis, and meningitis, and can also be harmful to maternal health by, for example, causing pre-term deliveries. The team spent close to 15,000 hours on this study, working with twelve different collaborators. They went on to establish a method that demonstrated the successful use of dried blood spots (DBS) to measure immune response against the bacterium, which took time and effort to prove considering that this type of sample had not been used before. Vishwanathan is also a Khabar contributor.
