For 25 years, Dr. Bipin Chudgar from Mumbai and his wife Dr. Daksha Chudgar from Baroda lived in Augusta, Georgia, both serving as obstetrician/gynecologists, he being recognized for his talent in drama and art in the Central Savannah River Area, and she for her support.
Now, he is spearheading an effort to build a temporary home for women with cancer and is donating $500,000 of the $2 million necessary for the project—all of this resulting from a small act of kindness.
Dr. Chudgar's wife, Daksha, was diagnosed with colon cancer in 2005. She recovered, but lost a later bout with cancer and died in 2009. In the midst of this, a volunteer from The Lydia Project arrived to give her a tote bag, comfort, and support. Because the nonprofit offered the family so much kindness, and because so many other women with cancer are in great need, Dr. Chudgar is now making a lasting contribution to the group and the women it serves.
“So many women who are cancer patients and from outlying areas do not come back to treatment because of lack of transportation or money or other issues,” said Chudgar. “They don't come back until they end up in an emergency room in the last stages of cancer.”
Chudgar has put a contract on 0.74 acres near Doctors Hospital for an 8,000-square-foot home to accommodate 12 to 15 women with cancer and is working to provide transportation for them. The house is to be built between May and August. Doctors Hospital has recently presented him with a humanitarian award for his many contributions to the community.
