  • Known for his virtuosity on the rudra veena, Hindustani musician Asad Ali Khan—who received the Padma Bhushan in 2008—died in India at 74.

  • Other June deaths: Journalist Jyotirmoy Dey, who was shot by underworld goons; politician Bhajan Lal; Nataraja Ramakrishna, dance exponent.
