August 5, 2015 will mark the third anniversary since a gunman with neo-Nazi ties entered the Oak Creek Gurdwara (Sikh house of worship) and killed six innocent worshipers, injured several others, and shook our nation.

On August 1, 2015 we will launch our third annual Day of Seva. For resources on how to organize your own event, click here. Our country recently mourned the loss of nine innocent lives who were killed while attending an iconic African American church in Charleston, South Carolina. Yet again, we witnessed a gunman, with white supremacist ties, enter a house of worship and murder African American congregants because the color of their skin didn’t match his own.

The Sikh community knows the heartbreaking pain and suffering that comes from an attack like this and we offer our thoughts and prayers to the victims' families and the extended Charleston community as they grieve during this tragic time.

This August, as Sikhs across the country come together for the third annual Day of Seva (selfess community service), more than ever, we must stand together with our neighbors of all faiths and races and loudly denounce hatred. We again call upon the community, Sikhs and non-Sikhs, to come together with the spirit of Chardi Kala (eternal optimism) and take a stand against hate.

The Oak Creek sangat is organizing their annual Chardhi Kala 6K Memorial Walk and Run, which will be held on Saturday, August 1, 2015, in Oak Creek, Wisconsin. If you cannot attend that event, we call upon you to show your support by organizing or participating in your own local Day of Seva event this August 1st.

Sangats across the United States have already committed to a Day of Seva event on August 1st. Will you join them in leading your community to do the same?
