Tuning in to Indian Dance to Tone Up
Speaking of the yoga craze and Indian dance, not to mention world records, exercise routines inspired by Bollywood and Bhangra have also found an audience. Fitness enthusiast Hemalayaa has made her mark in the first category, having come out with DVDs like Bollywood Burn and Beautiful Belly. Sarina Jain, on the other hand, is known for her Bhangra workout DVDs. Her multivolume series (funky style, hip hop style, etc.) includes a DVD that’s specifically for kids.
In England, meanwhile, the Sapnay School of Dance put together a Bollywood-inspired dance that won a place in the Guinness World Records. Last month, at Trafalgar Square in London, 212 people shimmied nonstop for five minutes while a song from the Hindi film Om Shanti Om played in the background. The performers had rehearsed for just an hour. This event was part of the Big Dance Breaking Record Day, which, according to the Guinness World Records, “encouraged young people to break several world records, including largest number of football freestyle tricks in one minute and largest number of street dance moves in 60 seconds.” The co-sponsors were London’s mayor and BBC Blast. Sapnay’s students, who won the 2005 U.K. Bollywood Dance championship, have also participated in London Mela and Diwali in Trafalgar Square, among other festivals.
