MOVIE REVIEW: Gadar2 (Mutiny2)

Riding high on nostalgia and the stardom of Sunny Deol, Gadar2, set against the backdrop of the 1971 Indo- Pak war, also serves as a launchpad for director Anil Sharma’s son, Utkarsh Sharma, who played Sunny and Ameesha’s son in the 2001 blockbuster Gadar: Ek Prem Katha. Now all grown up and ready, he takes on the villains just as his father did in the earlier film.

Decades after he rescued his wife Sakeena (Ameesha Patel) from Pakistan, intrepid truck driver Tara Singh (Sunny Deol) must again cross the border to save his son Charanjit Singh (Utkarsh Sharma), aka Jeetey, from the clutches of the evil Pakistani Army General Hamid Iqbal (Manish Wadhwa). So while Sunny vanishes from the scene for a whole chunk of the movie, he returns only to go on the rampage in Pakistan, treating us to some nonstop action sequences. For fans of the original film, there is the iconic hand pump scene here too, but with a difference!

Music is another highlight. The recreated versions of the songs “Main Nikla Gaddi” and “Udd Ja Kaale Kaavan” are the soul of the film, and the new numbers too don’t disappoint, especially “Khairiyat,” which tugs at your heartstrings.

So despite its flaws—no novelty factor really, deafening decibel levels, uneven pacing, too long—Gadar2 can be watched for Sunny Deol. The actor proves that, at 65, he still has it in him to set the screen afire.
