MOVIE REVIEW: Junglee
Junglee
Starring: Vidyut Jammwal, Atul Kulkarni, Pooja Sawant, Asha Bhat
Director: Chuck Russell
Music Director: Sameer Uddin
Shot in the beautiful locales of an elephant reserve in Thailand, American director Chuck Russell’s Bollywood debut is visually stunning, has a leading man with amazing action skills, majestic pachyderms of all sizes, and sends out an anti-poaching message. Sounds great, but unfortunately all this doesn’t add up to a great film, simply because the writing and screenplay are amateurish and flat.
A Mumbai-based veterinary doctor, Raj Nair (Vidyut Jammwal) returns home after 10 years to the elephant sanctuary run by his father in Orissa, only to encounter and fight a flourishing international poaching racket. Two leading ladies, both debutantes—Asha Bhat, playing a wildlife journalist, and Pooja Sawant, in the role of a mahout—join Jammwal in his noble and dangerous mission.
The second half of the movie is totally devoted to showcasing Jammwal’s expertise in pulling off flawless and implausible stunts, making them look like child’s play! Where the director fails is in stirring up emotions in the hearts of the audience.
When Rajesh Khanna’s pet elephant Ramu died in Haathi Mere Saathi, many children as well as adults cried their hearts out. But in Junglee you hardly shed a tear when the tuskers are massacred. Something is certainly amiss in Chuck’s Junglee!
But you can watch it for Vidyut Jammwal and the gentle giants.
