This reincarnation saga opens on a clichéd but watchable note, in picturesque Budapest where boisterous banker, Shiv (Sushant Singh Rajput) and charming chocolatier, Saira (Kriti Sanon) find themselves drawn to each other and very swiftly become intimate. Enter a new guy in the picture, liquor baron Zakir Merchant (Jim Sarbh of Neerja fame) to whom also Saira is attracted for a brief period!
So now you know. The three of them have some raabta (“connection” in Urdu) with each other from their past birth. Before you know it, we are transported into a world right out of Game of Thrones with some Mohenjo Daro thrown in, with these characters styled like tribal warriors. Post-interval, the film is a holy mess!
Sushant Singh Rajput is a fine actor, but here he tries too hard to lay on the roguish charm and is infinitely better as the deep-voiced warrior. Jim Sarbh’s psychopathic lover act is good enough, but his dialogue delivery is painfully awkward. And what, pray, is the talented Rajkummar Rao, hidden under layers of prosthetics, doing here! It is the poised Kriti Sanon who surprises with her remarkably assured body language and improved histrionics. She certainly has great chemistry with Sushant on screen.
The music is nice, and the icing on the cake is that Deepika Padukone sizzles in the title track "Raabta," a new version of the classic ballad from Saif Ali Khan’s Agent Vinod.
