Ranbir Kapoor, Priyanka Chopra, Ileana D’Cruz
Director: Anurag Basu
Music Directors: Pritam
After Rockstar, Ranbir Kapoor enthralls yet again, this time as a deaf and mute man who lives his life king-size. He brings an endearing Chaplinesque aura to his character, Barfi, turning the film into a muted celebration of life. Priyanka Chopra, playing an autistic girl, lends Ranbir good support.
Set in the hill town of Darjeeling, Barfi! is about the prankster Barfi (his actual name is Murphy), who is quite a charmer. He falls in love with a Bengali girl, Shruti (Ileana) and though she is engaged to a wealthy man, Shruti finds herself being drawn to Barfi. But she eventually chooses material comforts over love and gets married, leaving Barfi heartbroken. He then meets the autistic Jhilmil (Priyanka Chopra) and the two soon come to share a unique bond. Meanwhile, after six years of marriage, Shruti realizes that she still has deep feelings for Barfi. Is it too late?
Since the film is essentially a love triangle, it would have been better had the director stuck to the romantic track and not digressed into the whodunit sub-plot. The music is soulful and the cinematography is simply magnificent. Almost every frame is a picture postcard.
Priyanka pitches in a sincere autistic act but the effort shows sometimes. Ileana makes a confident, effortless debut in Hindi cinema, infusing her character with a charming vulnerability. Even the supporting actors, especially Rupa Ganguly and Akash Khurana, leave an impact.
