Kismat Konnection is no path-breaking cinema. It doesn’t claim to be. But its simplicity and charm does leave you with a smile on your face. You certainly won’t be cursing your kismat after watching it! You will also find shades of the Hollywood flick Just My Luck, Lage Raho Munnabhai and the director’s own Raju Ban Gaya Gentleman.
Raj Malhotra (Shahid Kapur) is a brilliant but unemployed architect in Toronto, Canada. His desperation for a job takes him to a quirky crystal ball gazer, Hasina Bano (Juhi Chawla) who advises him to find his lucky charm and not let go of it. Predictably, Raj bumps into Priya (Vidya Balan), an activist sort, and life is suddenly hunky dory for him. There’s just one hitch: Priya already has a boyfriend!
As far as acting goes, it’s undoubtedly Shahid’s movie. He is a complete natural and his high-energy performance is engaging all the way. Vidya has expressive eyes and a lovely smile but how you long to see her in a saree! However pretty and talented she might be, she cannot carry off western ensembles. By the way, the onscreen connection between Shahid and Vidya is, disappointingly, pretty lacklustre. Juhi tends to go over the top but then, her role demands that.
Music by Pritam is pleasing to the ears, especially the Bakhuda Tumhi Ho number. The dance numbers are catchy. Canada’s breathtaking locales have been captured beautifully by cinematographer Binod Pradhan. Just one thing: There was need for tighter editing in the second half. The film took its own sweet time to reach the finale.
