June 2011 - I am surprised to see the young cashier ask an old lady if she would like the bottles she had just bought un-sealed. She does, and he goes through her basket, opening bottles of jam, pickles, antacids and ketchup, and putting the lids back on again, gently.

ABCDs, FOBs, and now IBCAs
June 2011 - Today’s young desis have several acronyms to describe their fellow immigrants—ABCD (American-Born Confused Desi), FOB (Fresh off the Boat), Coconut Generation (brown on the outside, white inside), and so on. I’m wondering if they have bestowed any acronym on my generation that came to the United States during the sixties and seventies.
